Sugar & Spice & Not so Nice Review

Book: Sugar & Spice and Not So Nice
Author: Janet McNulty
Published: January 26,2012
Pages: 117
Source: Review copy from Author & Making Connections YA Group
My Rating: 3 Stars

Goodreads Summary:

Mellow Summers just wanted to go to college and get her film degree. She moved into a furnished apartment with her friend Jackie only to find that it already had a tenant: the ghost of a girl who was murdered a year earlier. Now it is up to Mellow to not only discover who the murderer is, but to prove it as well.

With the help of the ghost Rachel, Mellow sets out to solve the year old mystery. She soon finds out that she may have taken on more than she can handle. Pursued by someone who wants the identity of the killer to remain a secret, Mellow will have to use all her resources to outwit him and help the spirit of Rachel move on.

My Review

I love mystery stories and this one was a nice twist with paranomal elements. The author did a great job with this story. In this book we meet Mellow who is just another college student. She soon learns that with moving into her new apartment she gets to much more. Mellow learns the ghost of the girl that used to live in her apartment is still there.

Mellow and Rachel get along pretty well to say one of is human and the other one a ghost. Rachel asks Mellow to help her find out who killed her. What ensues is an adventure full of comedic hijinks. I liked that Mellow was an average girl and didn't take herself too seriously. She is like the cool friend you love to have around.

As Mellow and Rachel continue to put the pieces together it takes Mellow to different places. I liked that she was willingly to get out of her comfort zone. It made for some pretty laugh of loud moments. There were some situations I caught myself just chuckling out loud. The author did a great job with those scenes.

I overall thought this was a great read. It was a fun liht hearted mystery read. I found myself rooting for Mellow to come out on top. I liked Rachel's character too. She really proved that sometimes you have to be not so nice. I recommend this to readers that want a nice fun read. It will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

My Review

The colors on this cover were so pretty. The colors just popped aganist the dark background. I loved this book a lot. Gwen was such a great heroine. She was no pushover at all. I love for my heroines to be strong and take charge.

We start this story out by learning Gwen has to help the witches in a war aganist vampires. Gwen is conflicted because she is currently dating a vampire named Aiden. Aiden was such a great character. He was so willing to to do anything for her. He also allowed Gwen to be herself and loved her for who she was.

Gwen has to do some training in this book to learn more about her spirit walker abilites. I was so excited that Gwen learns how powerful she is. She gets to train with Kye who is aloof and Dorian who is the opposite. He has the whole bad boy thing working for him. I loved the twist they put in of who he really was.

Gwen again has to deal with Ian as she learns she is bonded with him. She and Aiden try to figure out how to break the bond. This leads them to the Vampire Council and Gwen getting to learn more about Aiden and his life before he became a vampire. The plan that is put in place promises to be a major showdown between the witches and vampires to stop Ian. The ending battle was nothing short of epic and amazing. It was great to see Gwen use her awesome powers.

Overall this book is a must read. It has everything you would want with the suspense, battles, and magical elements. The writing was fast paced. I speed through it and was suprised to see how fast I finished it. The writer did a great job with this book. Her characters were well written and the plot was great. I highly recommend this to others.

Book Summary:

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the
depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the
middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.
Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, eachof whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.
At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is
gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the
Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.
When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems tomysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

Excerpt:

Tristan
I like calling the Tri-Realms the underworld. For to me, that’s what it is. At times it feels more hellish than if I were at barbecue with a bunch of demons and zombies, roasting the undead on a fiery spit.

I long to feel the wind tousle my hair, the sunlight on my face. Not the fake sun my father’s engineers have created, but the real thing. There is nothing like it.

The underworld is so different. Dark, gloomy—it feels dead to me. Like it isn’t natural that any form of life other than the spiders and snakes and bats should occupy it. Certainly not humans.

And if we live in the underworld, then my father is the Devil himself, shrewd, evil, self-serving. They say that blood creates an unbreakable bond. If there is a bond between my father and me—created by blood, DNA, or something else entirely—it is as brittle as talc, cracking and crumbling while I was still in my mother’s womb.

I see her face again—the moon dweller with the shimmering black hair—so beautiful, so strong, so sad, like she is crying invisible tears. Reaching out, I try to touch her, to comfort her. But each time I try, she seems further away, as if some unseen force is keeping us apart. I run, pumping my arms and legs harder and harder, trying to keep up with her, but never able to close the gap. Finally, when I think my legs will collapse beneath me, she stops. I approach, my heart fluttering, my body trembling in anticipation of feeling her skin against mine. I hear a slight whirr and feel a whoosh of air as something flies just past my ear. A flaming arrow. No! Already a spot of blood is seeping through her white tunic where the arrowhead has pierced her breast. The flames are licking at her clothes, charring them. I try to run to her, to douse the flames, to pluck the arrow from her skin and stop the bleeding, but my feet won’t move. At first I think I’m in shock, that I’m simply too weak-minded to gain control of my body, but when I look at my feet, they are encased in stone. He moves past me. The archer. I can’t see his face, but I’d recognize his gait anywhere. My creator. I scream at him to Stop, please stop! but he ignores me, instead blowing softly on the flames, fueling them until they spread. I have to turn away—God, how desperately I want to turn away—but I can’t. Can’t. Can’t even close my eyes. I watch her burn. She is brave—doesn’t even cry out, but I can hear her screams anyway.

I wake up sweating and yelling, thrashing about in my bed. And thinking about the underworld.

Pandora's Key Blog Tour

Welcome to my stop on the Pandora's Key Blog Tour brought to you by Making Connections Book Tour. I have a review of the book for you to check out today.

Book: Pandora's Key
Author: Nancy Richardson Fischer
Published: Novemeber 19,2011
Series: Book 1 in The Key Triology
My Rating: 4 Stars

Summary:

When everything you believed about yourself is a lie, how do you unlock the truth…

Evangeline Theopolis has nightmares about the violent deaths of women she has never met. Her single mother, Olivia, suffers delusions she can’t hide. And Malledy, a brilliant young man, may have a disease that will leave him paralyzed and insane. Their lives are about to collide.

On Evangeline’s 16th birthday her mother gives her a necklace with an antique key charm—a family heirloom, though no one knows what the key unlocks.

Everything changes. Her mom is hospitalized. Her godmother attempts murder. An ancient Order tries to kill Evangeline, and a lethal sect to kidnap her.

Nothing makes sense—especially Evangeline’s own face, which has morphed from geeky to eerily stunning; the ancient key that feels strangely alive against her skin; and the magical abilities she begins to possess.

Evangeline must use her wits and supernatural powers to fight her deadly adversaries and discover her true identity. But can she accept who she really is and save the world?

My Review:

Let me start off by saying that anyone that knows me knows how much of a mythology lover I have become. I was so excited to get the chance to read this book as I have heard great things about it. I am so glad I read this too. It was everything I expected and then some. The author did an amazing job.

We start this book with us meeting Evangeline who appears to be having some sort of dream. The dream is really vivid and feels more like an out of body experience. We learn Evangeline lives with her mom and has a birthday coming up. For her birthday she receives an amazing necklace with a key attached. This is when things get interesting for Evangeline. She starts to notice differences with herself and others do too. Evangeline spends her birthday at school and comes home to find her mom unconscious.

Once her mom is at the hospital she learns some life changing information. Evangeline comes from a long line of Pandora's keepers. Yes that Pandora from Pandora's box. The Keepers are entrusted with the key to unlocking the box. She also unfortunely learns they are all fated to die young. Evangeline also learns that her best friend has sworn to protect her with her own life. She also learns that her mom's friend Sam will do anything to keep her safe also.

Evangeline finds herself having to take care of herself and figure out who she can trust. The book takes some twists and turns as she tries to find out more about herself and break the curse. She meets Tristan who is her best friend's boyfriend and finds out who he really is. Tristan who's real name is Malledy is such a complex character. I felt so bad for him and then he transformed into such an evil person eventhough I understood his motives.

Overall I think this book lived up to all I want in a book. The writing was superb and spot on. There was intrigue and a great plot. The characters were written very well and complex. The author did a great job with this book and I look forward to reading more from her.

Author Info & Her Links

I was born on the east coast and went to Cornell University. After college I worked as a writer for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus. It was a fun first job and I learned how to write quickly, and also that when elephants sneeze on you it's very (VERY) messy. After a year in the circus, I moved out west. I lived in Aspen, Colorado where I skied as much as possible and worked as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant. Great experience but I learned that waitressing is hard (HARD) and I'm not very good at it.
After Aspen, I moved to San Francisco, California where I worked as a writer for University of California, San Francisco and wrote freelance for LucasFilm. At UCSF I learned that sitting in a cubicle under fluorescent lights dulls my soul. LucasFilm taught me that writing freelance, especially fiction, is fun (FUN). So I headed to graduate school in Boulder, Colorado to further hone my skills.
For the first part of my freelance writing career I wrote sport autobiographies. I'd visit and travel with an athlete like Monica Seles, Bela Karolyi, Nadia Comaneci or Apolo Ohno and then write their book. It was a terrific job, but after ten years and tons of incredible experiences I got tired of writing other peoples' stories and not my own.

I've always loved books with adventure, magic, and dark forces. I'm a huge fan of Stephen King, Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, Suzanne Collins and George R.R. Martin. Those writers allow a reader to lose themselves in stories that are intense, sometimes other-worldly, yet strangely believable. I feel incredibly lucky that now I have the chance to create books for readers that will hopefully captivate and transport them into a world where the supernatural is possible with characters that they can relate to who are flawed yet totally compelling.

Today I live in the Pacific Northwest with my amazing husband, Henry, and our mostly loveable (but sometimes vorpal) Vizsla, Boone. When I'm not conjuring a story, I love to kite-board, bike, ski or plan adventures with Boone and Henry, who both make me laugh for different reasons and who are the best partners in fun a gal could ever imagine.

Do Rykerian and the Guardians have the ability to meet this fierce barbarian’s ultimatums, or will January suffer a horrid demise?

Excerpt of

I was lost in the events of the day and the amount of work I had and I was still nursing my wounded ego as I headed out of the lab. As I made my way down the corridor, I noticed six men advancing toward me.
It wasn’t their actions I noticed so much or even the way they walked. And though it was an oddity for them to even be here at all, it was their attire that captured my attention. They were dressed identically, in an extreme fashion, much like members of a gang or secret society. Large and muscular, they wore black vests and their bare arms were almost completely tattooed with tribal symbols of a sort. Metal bands criss-crossed their chests and their legs were tightly encased in leather. Knee high boots and black gloves finished off their ensembles.
As I neared them I felt my flesh tingle and the hairs on the back of my neck come to attention. Gooseflesh erupted and alarms started clanging in my head. I sucked in my breath and as I did, my eyes connected with the apparent leader. I say this because he was in the front of the formation as they plodded along.
Time stood still as our eyes connected. His were an uncanny shade, lavender with hints of indigo and specks of silver. It was a hue I was unfamiliar with but they were intriguing and fascinating. The alarms were still ringing in my ears and the air felt electrically charged around us.
"Halt!" I turned into stone. I couldn’t move a muscle. He cocked his head as his eyes bore into mine. "Breathe!" I distinctly heard his command in my mind and I was helpless to disobey him. I felt myself take a deep cleansing breath. I questioned him with my eyes. He flicked his head toward his men and they stepped back several feet. "Who are you? Why are you here?" I was confused by the demanding questions swirling in my brain but felt compelled to answer him. I had never used mind reading to communicate, but I was sure he would hear my answer. "I’m January St. Davis. I’m here working on an internship for college credit."
"You are
human?" he asked with incredulity. I wasn’t sure what he meant by that. Why would he want to know if I was

About the Author and Her Links

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.
A.M.’s Boss: Hello.
A.M: Hey Boss, I'm calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbucks near the interstate.
A.M.’s Boss: Why ever would I want to do that?
A.M.: Because I quit!
A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.
A.M.: Hey hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?
A.M.’s Hubs: Sure...having some car trouble?
A.M.: Not at all. I don't have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job.
A.M.’s Hubs: WHAT?!
A.M.: It's time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist.
So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a young adult paranormal romance author of self-published ebooks. Her series, The Guardians of Vesturon, centers around a family of six siblings and is a mix of humor, mystery, suspense and of course, love. Survival and Resurrection are her first and second full length novels, and Beginnings is her prequel novella to the series. Determinant, her third in the series will be released 6/30/12

Welcome Krista to Doctor's Notes. I am so glad you are interviewing with us today.

Thanks for having me on today.

Can you describe your writing process? Anyplace special you like to write at or any special music you listen to?

I’m a bit obsessive when it comes to my writing. I can’t type if there’s any noise around. Any. We’re talking tomb silent. My sweet husband bought me a comfy pair of headphones that help me to become even more anti-social than I already am.

What inspired you to become a writer?

That’s easy. Great books! I wrote as a kid, but fell back in love with writing when
The Lure of Shapinsay, I hope they really feel like they’re on the tiny Scottish island of Shapinsay. I want them to see the rolling green hills and smell the peat smoke in the air.
Describe your writing style?

I write in first-person because I want my reader to slip into the main character’s shoes. My writing is full of angst, tension, and detail. When my readers read
The Lure of Shapinsay I really love Eamon, my complicated selkie (seal man) with a penchant for killing sheep. He really hates anything to do with land. It’s a pickle for Kait, the human that falls in love with him.
What character of all of your characters do you love the most?

 In
Goddess Interrupted. I really love historical works, young adult, and paranormal. All of it must have romance, or a great love story ribboned through it.
What is the best compliment you have received as a writer?

I’ve received so many lovely compliments. But the one I’ll never forget is when I was testing out my very first novel on a sixteen-year-old girl I had never met. She stayed up all night to read my hefty sized novel in one sitting. That was the first time I realized I didn’t suck.

What are you reading right now and do you have a favorite genre?

I’m reading

Give us some interesting facts about yourself? The Lure of Shapinsay is a very unique paranormal romance and I hope you enjoy it. Oh, I know there’s a sexy guy on the cover and all, but it’s rated PG and not erotica as some people assume.

I’m a critical care nurse with four daughters. I love the sea and collect seashells obsessively. I live in blue jeans and eat pizza like a fiend. My house is on property once owned by Pocahontas.

What do you want to tell your readers?

The Wind Whisperer will be released later this year. It’s a young adult romance about a fifteen-year-old Native American girl with the ability to "hear" the voices of the wind spirits. While her tribe’s at war with a brother tribe, Anaii falls in love with the enemy. It’s a juicy love triangle filled with intrigue, murder, battles, and kidnappings. Even the guys will like this one. It’s the first in a trilogy.
What can we look forward to from you next?

Twilight became huge. It occurred to me there’s an insatiable audience of women and girls who crave non-raunchy "love" stories. In my opinion, it wasn’t the vampires that made Twilight huge—it was the classic love story.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is brought to you by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week I am waiting on a highly aniticpated read for me. I have wanted the second book in this series since I finished the first one last year. A huge thanks to Viking and Netgally for letting me review this one.

Goodreads Summary:

Deborah Harkness exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, Book One of the magical All Souls Trilogy and an international publishing phenomenon. The novel introduced Diana Bishop, Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and the handsome geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont; together they found themselves at the center of a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.

Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries, delivering one of the most hotly anticipated novels of the season.

This is expected to be released on July 10,2012.

What are you waiting on this week?

Pack of Lies Blog Tour by Innovative Online Tours

Welcome to my stop on the Pack of Lies Blog Tour by Innovative Online Tours. I have a review for you today as part of the Review Day Blitz.

Book: Pack of Lies
Authors: Staci Weber & Sara Dailey
Published: April 8,2012
Publisher: Boroughs Publishing Group
Series: Book One of Red Ridge Pack Series
Rating: 4 Stars

Summary:

The last thing Allison Wright ever expected when she moved to Red Ridge, New Mexico was to come muzzle to muzzle with the wolf of her dreams.

Seventeen-year-old Allison Wright is convinced she’s losing her mind. Uncontrollable mood swings, hot flashes, and the urge to punch anyone who gets in her way are suddenly becoming everyday occurrences. Before her erratic behavior gets out of hand, Allison’s mother finally comes clean about her dark secret. Mom is a werewolf, and soon Allison and her brother Aiden will suffer the same fate. When Allison reaches her breaking point, the family leaves their life in Texas to move to Red Ridge, New Mexico where they rejoin the pack that Allison’s mother left behind almost 20 years ago.

Unfortunately, not everyone in Red Ridge is thrilled about Allison’s arrival, especially when she attracts the attention of the very handsome, very taken, soon-to-be alpha, Cade Walker. Little does Allison know, her mere presence is causing a rift in a once unified pack. Not only has Cade been forbidden from being with Allison by his father, the pack’s alpha, Cade’s girlfriend, Kendall Stuart, will stop at nothing to get Allison out of the picture. Well on her way to becoming the next alpha’s mate, Kendall expects to rule the pack by Cade’s side even if it means teaming up with a rogue werewolf with an agenda of his own. Determined to get rid of Allison permanently, when Kendall and the rogue join forces, all hell breaks loose and no one in the pack is safe, especially not Cade and his true mate.

Excerpt:
“I picked up on a scent that stopped all thought, all movement, leaving me standing completely still, breathing in a smell that I would never forget. A mix of earth, and musk, and honeysuckle, and sandalwood filled my senses leaving me with a need, a need to find this thing that was suddenly making me salivate, suddenly making me ache with desperation.
Without hesitation, my nose hit the ground as I began to track the enticing smell. I didn’t look up. I didn’t stop moving. I didn’t stop to think about what I might find. None of it mattered. I needed to find the source of that wonderful scent.
In the near distance, I heard a rustling in the brush, which ceased the mission that had held me spellbound. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked around, spooked by what I might find, but what I saw was the last thing I expected.
Peering out from behind a tall oak, a wolf was watching me. We just stood still, staring at each other, neither of us moving a muscle. His amazing green eyes were in sharp contrast to his deep, dark fur. He was a much bigger wolf than me, strong and lean, and the glint in his eyes told me that he was no ordinary wolf.”

Review:

Pack of Lies was a great read. I tend to love werewolf reads and this one didn't dissappoint. I always love to see the werewolf story told through the eyes of a werewolf girl. It just makes for a better story in my opinion. The authors did a great job of telling this story through Alli.

I love the character of Alli. She was a tough heroine like I love them to be. We start out meeting her by finding out she has gotten into another fight at school. We learn she has a tendency to fight alot. Alli sits down to a family dinner and learns that she is part werewolf. She also learns that they will be moving so she can be around others like her.

Alli learns that she is moving to Red Ridge to live with the pack her mother left. Alli and her brother Aiden are introduced to the other teens in the pack. Aiden instantly fits in while Alli has to adjust. Alli leaves and turns into a wolf for the first time and meets Cade in his wolf form. They instantly connect with each other.

Cade is what you would expect from the next Alpha and so much more. He is sweet and so friendly. I can tell him and Alli are meant to be together. There is just one obstacle in their way and her name is Kendall. Kendall is Cade's current girlfriend adn the character you will love to hate. She is just so snarky, mean, and vindictive but once you learn more about her I started to understand why she was the way she was.

Overall I loved this book. Alli became one of my new favorite characters. I can't help it since I love strong female heroines. I also loved the authors writing style. They crafted a great story with a great plot and awesome characters. This book had all the things I love with intrigue, romance, and characters coming into their own.
