Right now I have a beagle/lab mix dog named Jasmine and a tortoiseshell cat named Alice. But I want to tell you about my daughter’s newest friend, a little Chihuaha mix. We’re not sure what she’s mixed with, but we think it might be Miniature Doberman Pinscher. She named her Vala, after a character on the Stargate television series.
Vala was undernourished and depressed when my daughter first met her. The first time visiting the dogs, Vala didn’t get up from her cushion. The second time, she got up and the look on her face stopped my daughter in her tracks. She asked to visit with Vala, and in moments, she knew this little sweetie would be the newest member of our family.
Her debut novel, Shades of the Future, published by Turquoise Morning Press, is available July 2012. What would you do if you could see your future? What you think is “the gift” may actually be a curse.
My husband and I call her our granddog. We have her spend the night for fun. She and my dog Jasmine love each other. Jasmine is fourteen years old, and doesn’t do much anymore but sleep all day. But when Vala comes over, she jumps and runs and plays with her friend like she’s a puppy again, until they’re both worn out.
Mariah Davis, the heroine in my book, Shades of the Future, works at the Happy Paws Pet Rescue. It’s where she got her pet Schnauzer, Lady, and where she works with another dog named Woody. In honor of all the hardworking people at agencies like Happy Paws, I’m donating 10% of the royalties from sales of Shades of the Future to the ASPCA. Hopefully the money will help to connect wonderful pets with families that love them. You can download a sample chapter at my Amazon Author page to see if you’ll like the book.
Now it’s your turn. Do you want to share anything about your pets?

Suzanne, I absolutely love that you're donating 10% of your royalties to the ASPCA. Kudos to you! Loved getting to know the dogs in your life. We're more of a cat family, and every cat that we've 'adopted' has been a stray. I was just a kid when Mario showed up at our front door. I was a pre-teen when Patches stopped by for a visit. And MoJo, our most beloved pet, came into our lives when I was in my mid-teens. He was so much more than a cat. He was an angel on earth.
We had MoJo with us for close to a decade, and it took us five of those ten years to realize he was a he and not a she. The vet was happy to correct us. We decided to lose the hot pink flea collar after that.
I think animals bring so much joy to people's lives. I'm really looking forward to reading Shades of the Future! :)
Poor MoJo! He had a mixed up identity for all those years! Thanks for sharing your cat stories. Most of our cats have been rescues, too. Right now our cat Alice totally does not appreciate the fact that I saved her. She'll only speak to men. Women she hates. She adores my son and his friends and my husband, and actually drools when they pet her. Eww!
I'm sure the cats are purring and the dogs doing whatever cute doggie things they do, thanking you for your generosity!
We're still missing Sally the Crazy Dog around here. Of course, we've got plenty of reminders of her 14 years with us--Remember that old saying, "Kilroy was here!"? Everytime I come across a spot in the carpet or a scratched up door I feel like printing a little sign, "Sally was here!" :-)
Good luck with SHADES OF THE FUTURE, Suzanne! It sounds like barking good fun!
Oh, Cathy, it never goes away, does it? Sally's been gone about a year now? I have a little squirrel bird feeder under an oak tree that always reminds me of my cat Emma, and she's been gone three years.
Thanks for stopping by! Arf! Arf!
Sheika, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate you hosting me here on your blog. It was fun to share a bit of my pet family with readers. You have a beautiful spot on the web!
My black Lab, Toby, was a pound rescue. Fully papered, obedience trained, and sporting a bum foot from a car accident, he can't hunt, so consequently, got turned over to the pound. Best $25 I've ever spent. In my YA dystopian, it's a black and white spotted Great Dane that gets tethered to the front porch of my heroine's father's vet clinic, and is the side character instrumental in landing my heroine in my hero's life, when her leash breaks. Who says "divine intervention" can't come on four legs and a pension for chasing the neighborhood cat? Loved the post!
