Goodreads Summary:
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

My Review:
The cover of this book was truly breathtaking. It was simple yet so complex and made me want to jump right into book. I loved that the cover with the crying blood showed the way vampires used to be written and was glad to see some of the old ways back. This was a great precursor to this amazing book. I couldn't wait to read this one.

Hello amazing heroine where have you been lately? Finally we have an amazing kickbutt heroine and her name is Allie Sekemento. Allie is all you can want in a heroine. She is brave, courageous, and can hold her own. She was such a fierce protector and so loyal to her friends. The author did a great job of showing how much of a provider she really was.

This book starts out with us meeting Allie who we learn is an unregistered human. This world is something different in which vampires are in charge. The world has been turned on its head and humans are now controlled by vampires. There are registered and unregistered humans with Allie refusing to register as she wants to be in control of her own life. This is another thing I loved about her that she was willing to fight for what she believed in eventhough she could have had an easier life. Allie's world is turned on it's head when she becomes what she loathes the most.

Allie is turned into a vampire and must learn how to adapt. The author again did an amazing job of showcasing how strong Allie is as she learns how to live as a vampire. Allie is mentored by Kanin who I loved as finally we are back to the real deal vampires. Gone are the nice friendly non human blood drinking vampires and back in full force are the ones that hunt for their food. The author did amazing job of having Kanin still have a heart eventhough he was a vampire.I really loved the complexity of his character and couldn't wait to learn more about him. Unexpected events lead to Allie having to part from Kanin and learn to live on her own.

This being on her own leads her to meeting Zeke. Zeke was an amazing hero and I was glad to see the building chemistry between him and Allie. I also loved their growing friendship and willinginess to trust each other and just follow their instincts. My heart broke when it was time for Allie to go off on her own and I can only hope they will see each other again as I wanted my happily ever after for them. Overall Julie Kagawa has a promising hit on her hands and I can't wait for book two on this excellent series. This is a must read for readers who love fierce heroines, vampires and romance.
